Happy Valentines Day! - projects from Needle Felting Class
Classes


Yarns Unlimited offers a wide variety of classes and workshops in knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving and other fiber crafts taught by instructors who are experts in the field. All sessions are held at the store in Fountain Square Mall unless otherwise noted.

Classes are limited to 4-6 students so early registration and payment are recommended to guarantee a space in class.  To reserve your space, please complete the information requested following the class listing below. We'll contact you for confirmation and payment information.



All supplies for classes are available for purchase at Yarns Unlimited. Our instructors will guide you in choosing the appropriate materials.  Most patterns and printed materials for the classes are FREE.

Put your newly found skills to use and go beyond the basics to create beautiful things. This course is designed for those who just completed Beginning Knitting or for anyone who needs to brush up on their knitting skills. You will learn how to read patterns, do cables and other fancy stitches depending on your interest or need.
Fee: $45.


BEGINNER'S AND RUSTY KNITTER'S INTENSIVE SESSION - Learn to Knit in one session!

This class is designed for those who have no previous experience in knitting or for those who might need a refresher course. By the end of the class you will have the confidence to start the first knitting project of your choice. You'll also learn some great knitting tips and techniques, time permitting.

Fee: $30 (includes printed instructions)


KNIT AN HEIRLOOM - Sampler Afghans
2nd Tuesday of each month, 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Marla Dawson
Design your own afghan or throw by selecting 20 of the 60 square patterns featured in the classic, old-time favorite book, Sampler Afghans.  This collection of unique designs include cables, tweed, eyelet, shell, bobble, moss, rib and much more--guaranteed to increase your knitting know-how with every square you complete.  The squares are identical in size (12" square) and will be assembled using your own unique style. Marla will guide you in creating your piece and teach you the new skills required to make the patterns from the book.  By the end of the year, you will have created a beautiful and unique heirloom to adorn your bed or sofa or give away as a fabulous gift to someone special!
Fee:  $60 for first 6 classes January-December

HAPPY HOOKING: Introduction to Crochet

Learn the basic crochet stitches and create a beautiful scarf while you learn.  Crochet is now the cutting edge of fashion, and this class will teach you how to do the basic stitches to make beautiful crocheted items.  If you're a knitter, it's a great idea to know basic crochet stitches as you can enhance, embellish, or finish off your knitted projects with crochet.

I can't believe I'm Crocheting

HAPPIER HOOKING:  Crocheted Hat
Thursdays - 2/4, 2/11 - 4:00-5:30 pm, Robin Edmundson (Daytime)
Sharpen or enhance your crochet skills by creating a beautiful hat.  This class is designed for rusty hookers or for those who just completed the beginning crochet class.  This is your chance to  practice your skills using the basic stitches and learn how to crochet in the round, increase and decrease--all while making a hat to fit you perfectly!
Fee:  $30 (pattern included)


REALLY HAPPY HOOKING:  Stacked Diamond Scarf
Thursdays - 2/18, 2/25 - 4:00-5:30 pm, Robin Edmundson (Daytime)
Even the most complicated crochet pieces are made with simple stitches.  The 'stacked diamond' stitch is a great introduction to crochet lace.  One skein of beautiful yarn is all you need to make this beautiful scarf that is sure to compliment your Spring wardrobe--also great for gifts.

KNIT FIX:  Learn to fix your knitting mistakes
Thursday - 2/11, 6:00-8:00 pm, Faith Hawkins
Dropped stitches, added stitches, split stitches and other knitting "stitches"--they're really no big deal.  This workshop will focus on the problems that creep into your knitting and help you learn how to identify and fix them.  If you have a project in progress with a little bit of "oops", bring it along.

TECHNIQUES NO KNITTER SHOULD BE WITHOUT:  30 tips to improve your knitting

Expand your knowledge with tips from the experts. They know that improving your knitting is all in the details and that makes your project look fabulous. Learn the perfect cast on, joining yarns the easy way, make perfect edges and much more!

TWO-COLOR WORKSHOP
Saturday - 2/13, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, Carolynne Gieryn
In just two hours you can learn the tricks of two-color knitting. It is easy and will push your knitting to a new level. Whether you are interested in hats, sweaters, or mittens this workshop will start you on your way. Stop by at By Hand Gallery and see the beautiful sweaters and hats that Carolynne creates with her color techniques and be inspired.

COLOR HARMONIES

Saturday - 1/23, 1:00-4:00 pm, Robin Edmundson
Take the mystery out of putting colors together. Learn how to combine colors in beautiful ways from a master colorist. Topics will include basic color theory using color tools, wheels and books, classic color combinations, and more. Please bring photos or items with color combination that you really like and some that you really don't like to work with.

ON YOUR TOES!

(Daytime) Mondays - 1/11 (1:00-5:00 pm), 1/18 (1:00-5:00 pm), 1/25 (1:00-3:00 pm), Judith Smith-Ille
Learn how to knit socks toe up, two at a time on one 40" needle. Socks are finished together and identical! This is a highly technical class that takes 10 hours of instructions. You will learn how to knit the magic loop method of circular knitting to make a pair of socks designed to fit your feet perfectly. Basic knitting skills required; no prior sock knitting experience necessary.
Fee: $65 (includes printed detailed instructions)


TOP-DOWN SOCKS KNITTING
Saturdays - 11/7 & 11/14, 9:00-11:00 am  Faith Hawkins
Learn the traditional way of knitting socks and knit a pair for yourself or someone special. Knitting socks are the perfect little project that you can easily take along everywhere. Check out our wide variety of lovely sock yarns for all seasons and samples to inspire you and sign up for the class.

EASY & QUICK TOP DOWN KNITTED HATS (to fit any size)
Saturday - 1/23, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Judith Smith-Ille
Top down hats are easier to fit and you'll make a perfect hat for any size you desire on one 40" Addi needle using the magic loop method of circular knitting. You can use the pattern provided to make an elegant topper to go along with your festive holiday ensemble using Tilli Tomas beaded silk yarn. For hat size, measure diameter of head just above the ears and the length of head from top of crown to top of ears. Chart for average size heads of babies, children and adults will also be provided.

KNITTED MITTENS
Mondays - 1/25, 2/1, 6:00-7:30 pm, Marla Dawson
This is an easy pattern for a beginning knitter or anyone who likes a fun, fast project. You'll knit in the round, rib, increase, decrease, knit 2 together and pick up stitches. Each hand is knitted exactly the same with no lefts and rights.

LACE KNITTING - Lacy Wimple
Tuesdays - 1/19, 1/26, 2/3, 6:00-7:30 pm, Dee Mortensen
A wimple is a knitted tube that is worn as a combination hood and neck warmer. This elegant version, designed by Romi for Knitty, is made of combination kid mohaior and silk with glass beads sprinkled throughout. It's a great intro to lace knitting for those wanting to try lace but are intimidated.

FAIRY TALE KNITS
Wednesdays, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 6:30-8:30 pm, Alison Stewart-Guinee
Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Robin Hood, knights and magic carpets...the patterns for all of these fairy tale characters and more can be found in the pages of Fairy Tale Knits. Thumb through the pages of this book with your favorite child, pick a pattern, and then come knit it with the author. Alison will walk you through the pattern of your choice, from beginning to end (or from Once upon a time to ...Happily ever after), helping you to make a Fairy Tale knit that is uniquely your own.

SWEATER KNITTING & CLINIC

Tired of knitting scarves? Have you been wanting to knit a sweater but not sure if you have the skills for it? Or maybe there is an unfinished sweater hibernating in your closet. If so, this is just the class for you!    Bring your dreams and fears of sweater knitting (and your works in progress) to this sweater clinic and let Alison hold your hand as you work your way to a finished garment. This class will explore the ins and outs of sweater knitting, from design decisions to finishing; giving each participant the skills they need to make a sweater of their very own.

WAVY ZIG-ZAG RIB SCARF

This is an exciting variation of the classic rib scarf that is fun to wear for either men or women. This class exposes a knitter to perfect edges, matching cast on and cast off, easy yarn joins, stitch maps and pattern rhythms, and a knitting life-line for complicated or long patterns. Make it in a luscious red colored yarn, and you'll have the perfect Valentine's Day gift!

HOLY COWL! - A Neck Warmer Fit for a Queen
Saturday - 1/16, 9:00 am - 12:00 noon, Judith Smith-Elle
Make a fashion statement this season! This stylish cowl/neck warmer is easy to make and even easier to wear. Learn to knit in the round with one 40 inch needle (Magic Loop) to make a reversible cowl (the new scarf!) finished with a beautiful knitted picot edging. We'll use a soft bulky yarn like Misti Alpaca for the warmth and the feel of something wonderful to keep out the cold air. Printed instructions will be provided with all techniques used.

KNITTING WITH BEADS

Create a fanciful scarf using contemporary fibers and stunning beads. It's easier than you think! In this class you will learn the basics of incorporating beads with your knitting to make a stunning scarf. Stop by at Yarns Unlimited to see the sample project and the special exhibit of fabulous knitted pieces with beads created by our expert knitters--guaranteed to inspire you!

KNITTED DOG SWEATER

Create a customized sweater for the dogs in your life that will keep them warm during their cold walks. We'll have a variety of patterns that you can choose from so bring your dog's measurements to make a sweater that will fit perfectly.

FELTED CAT CUDDLER

Wednesdays - 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 6:00-7:30 pm, Judith Vitaliano
Create a snuggly nest for your cat and free your knitting basket of fur! It's the perfect cuddler to keep your cat safe, warm and comfortable while he/she spend many hours sleeping. You can use varying amounts of felting and different worsted to heavy worsted weight yarns to achieve a cuddler to suit your kitty. Knitting is fast with 4 strands of yarns on size 17 needles.
Fee: $40


KNITTED BIRD MOBILE
Tuesdays, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 6:00-7:30 pm, Katie Polit
This is a fun, whimsical project that you can make for a baby or for yourself to brighten up a corner in your home. Knitty.com designer Meg created this mobile of branches and birds using I- cord for twigs, garter-stitch for leaves and combination color knitting in stockinette stitch for the birds. Bring your own stash yarns if you like and the appropriate size needles or supplies may be purchased at the store. Students can split/share skeins of yarns for a combination of colors.

KNITTED MINI SWEATER FOR DOLLS
Mondays - 2/1, 2/8 & 2/15 - 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Emily Purcell
Here's your chance to practice skills you can use to make your first sweater and create a unique outfit for your favorite doll. In this class we will make a doll sweater adapted from Elizabeth Zimmerman's iconic seamless sweater pattern. Bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal to the first class so you can plan your sweaters.

KNITTED & FELTED BAGS

Thursdays - 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 6:00-7:30 pm, Jennifer Peterson
Knitted, felted bags are fun, stylish and great for gift-giving. Choose from 2 basic bag patterns in styles that are sure to suit you or anyone on your list. Learn how to pick the right yarn, knit in the round, pick up stitches, knit I-cords for handles, and the basics of felting. Your instructor, Jennifer, has completed numerous felted bags in a multitude of designs and is an expert in felting.

NEEDLE FELTING WORKSHOP - A Felted Heart for Valentines
Saturday - 1/30, 1:00-4:00 pm, Andrea Golden
Learn how to use roving to create projects and embellishments using needle felting technique. This is a very popular fiber art form that allows almost limitless designs. In this class, you will make heart shaped sachets--make perfect Valentines gifts! Needle felting kits and roving are available for purchase at Yarns Unlimited.

SPINNING 101
Thursdays - 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 6:00-8:00 pm, Kandy Schwandt
Making yarn on a spinning wheel is an ancient craft that is still relevant today and growing in popularity. This class is designed for those who have never spun yarn before, and we will cover all the basics. Sign up early, as Yarns Unlimited has a limited number of wheels that you can take home to practice on during your class weeks, or you may bring your own.
Fee: $60 (includes use of spinning wheel to take home-based on availability)


SPINNING 102
Thursdays - 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 6:00-8:00 pm, Kandy Schwandt
Know how to spin a basic yarn, but not sure what to do next? This class will teach you to create exactly the yarn you imagine. Topics include spinning finer and heavier yarns, woolen and worsted spinning, and a little fiber preparation. This class is a great follow up to Spinning 101 or a way to brush up your skills. You will need a spinning wheel for this class, or borrow one from Yarns Unlimited (a limited number are available) or bring your own.
Fee: $50 (includes use of spinning wheel to take home if needed)


DROP SPINDLE WORKSHOP
Saturday - 2/6, 1:00-3:00 pm, Kandy Schwandt
Spinning yarn on a drop spindle is traditional, portable, elegant and inexpensive. Join us for a morning of spinning where you'll learn basic techniques for creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind yarn with a simple drop spindle. This class is for those who are completely new to spinning as well as those who already know how to spin on a spinning wheel. Bring a drop spindle if you have one or purchase one at Yarns Unlimited. A limited number of spindles are available for use during class--please let us know if you'll need one.

LOOM WEAVING

Tuesdays - 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9 - 6:00-8:00 pm, Suzanne Halvorson
Hand loom weaving is an art that is finding a new voice. This class for both beginners and intermediate weavers will introduce you to the joys of creating scarves, table runners, and much more on four harness floor looms at Yarns Unlimited. Intermediate students will learn about working with pattern, while beginners will focus on color, texture and plain weave. Sign up early, as space is limited to 5 students.
Fee: $85 (includes use of loom in the shop during the 4-week session)



SPECIALTY WEAVING
Tuesdays - 2/16, 2/23, 3/2, 3/9 - 6:00-8:00 pm, Suzanne Halvorson
Use your basic weaving skills to create beautiful patterns such as double weave and African inspired warp faced weaves or shadow weave. Suzanne, our master weaver, is a nationally recognized and published weaving instructor who specializes in these types of weaving.
Fee: $85 (includes use of loom in the shop during the 4-week session)

WEAVING TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP I - Focus on Loom Dressing

(New Date!) Saturday - 1/23, 9:00 am-12:00 noon, Suzanne Halvorson
This workshop is for those who are rusty on how to dress a loom or for those who have looms who want to learn front to back. We will also cover how to calculate yardage for projects.
Fee: $40



WEAVING TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP II - Designing and Pattern Interpretation

Saturday - 2/20, 9:00 am-12:00 noon, Suzanne Halvorson
Pattern weaving can be a mystery that is easily solved. Along with learning to read patterns, we will also discuss the elements of color and design for weavers.
Fee: $40



RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING WORKSHOP I (all levels)

Saturday - 1/16, 10:00 am-4:00 pm, John Salamone
Rigid Heddle or Knitter's Loom is a table top loom that is portable and comes with a carrying case for portability. You can make a woven project in less than a day! In yarn shops across the country Rigid Heddle weaving has taken off like a rocket! You can use any knitting yarn to create a beautiful and fast hand-woven scarf. Use our looms or bring your own--you'll enjoy the scarf you make and hopefully be hooked and want to make many more. This class is for both beginning and intermediate Rigid Heddle Loom weavers.
Fee: $60 (+ 10% off towards purchase of loom during class)



RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING WORKSHOP II - Specialty Weaving

Saturday - 2/20, 10:00 am-4:00 pm, John Salamone
In this workshop we will weave with two shuttles to create either a houndstooth or log cabin scarf. You will learn how to thread the loom for these color effects and keep your selvedge edges nice and neat.
Fee: $60 (+ 10% off towards purchase of loom during class)


KNITTING FOR KIDS
Mondays - 1/25, 2/1, 2/8 - 4:00-5:30 pm, Katie Polit
This class is for young knitters from ages 8-12 and welcomes beginners and continuing students alike. It is designed to be flexible and most of all fun! Students will work on projects of their own choosing, selected with the help of the instructor, and based on the student's individualized interest and skill-level.
Fee: $30 for 3 sessions (includes material)



MONDAY NIGHT KNITTING CLINIC
Mondays - 6:00-8:00 pm, Faith Hawkins
All levels of knitters are welcome to this knitting support clinic. One of our staff will be available to provide expert instruction and assistance on current projects including understanding patterns and fixing mistakes to get you back on track. She can also help you choose your next project and the perfect material to use. Please come by 6:30 p.m. as the session may be cancelled if no one shows up by then.
Fee: $5 session (refundable with a minimum $5 purchase)
