CLASSES

 

Yarns Unlimited offers a wide variety of classes and workshops in knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving and other fiber crafts. All sessions are held at the store in Fountain Square Mall unless otherwise noted.

For class schedule, please sign up in the email link below to receive our newsletter with listing of upcoming classes or stop by at the store, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, to pick up a copy. 

To register for classes, please stop by or call Yarns Unlimited during the hours of 10:00 am-6:00 pm,  Monday - Saturday.  Phone (812) 334-2464.  Payment is requested at the time of registration to secure your place in the class.  Classes are limited to 4-6 students, so please sign up early.  This is not a secure website, so do not e-mail us your credit card information. 

*All students receive a 10% discount on all supplies purchased at the store during classes.*

Free street parking after 6:00 p.m. on weeknights and all day Saturdays in the Fourth Street Garage ("Garage Art"), all levels.  You can take the walkway across from the 3rd level of the garage to Yarns Unlimited.

BEGINNING KNITTING
Tuesday 7/28, 8/4, 8/11, 8/18  6:30-8:30 pm, Marla Dawson
Now is the time to fulfill your wish to become a knitter.  We guarantee that this intro to knitting class will change your life.  You have always wanted to knit, and here is your chance to learn.  It is easy, fun, and the projects are endless.  Join the movement of the most popular hobby in the US...knitting!
Fee: $60. (includes Teach Yourself to Knit book, bamboo needles, and a skein of yarn--over $20.00 value)

INTERMEDIATE KNITTING

A continuation of Beginning Knitting that you will not want to miss out on.  This course is designed either for those who have enjoyed Beginning Knitting or who need to brush up on their knitting skills.
Fee: $45.

BEGINNER'S INTENSIVE SESSION  -  LEARN TO KNIT IN AN AFTERNOON
Saturday 7/11 2:00-5:00 pm,  Judith Smith-Ille
No previous experience in knitting required for this class or for those who might need a refresher course.  By the end of the class you will have the confidence to start the first knitting project of your choice.  Printed instructions will be provided.  Materials needed are worsted weight yarn and a pair of straight or circular needles size 7 or 8.  It is easier for beginners to learn on the shorter straight needles.  You may purchase the items in the shop prior to the start of class.  Left-handers welcome as the teacher is a leftie and knits both ways.  You'll also learn some great knitting tips and techniques time permitting.  If you need to purchase yarn, you might pick a worsted weight yarn in a color you would like to use for making a scarf.  We'll get you started right away.
Fee:  $35.

INTRODUCTION TO CROCHET
Thursday 7/9, 7/16, 6:00-7:30 pm, Nancy Lightfoot
This class is intended for those who have never crocheted before.  Crochet is now the cutting edge of fashion, and you will learn the basics of how to do the stitches, how to read a pattern, and where to go from here.
Fee:  $35. (includes Teach Yourself How to Crochet book, $9.95 value)

Socks are finished together and identical!
Saturday  7/25, 8/1 8/8,  9 am to 1 pm,  Judith Smith-Ille
Starting at the toe you will learn how to knit the magic loop method (only 1 needle) of circular knitting to make a pair of socks designed for your feet.  Knitting on one 40" needle is a clever technique that can be used for sleeves, mittens, fingerless gloves, wristies, headbands or any project that requires circular knitting.  No more struggling with 4 to 5 double pointed needles, you won't have to worry about running out of yarn, no second sock syndrome since you will be doing 2 at one time, no gauge swatch necessary and you can try on the sock for a perfect fit.  You will learn the anatomy of a sock, how to get a perfect fit for any size foot, German long tail cast-on, horizontal closed cast on, double thread and YO increase, Russian rock and roll, seamless yarn joins, gussets, short row marked heel, optional cast offs and blocking.  Supplies needed are sock yarn of your choice (suggest worsted weight for your first pair with this technique) and appropriate 40 inch Addi (straight shaft) needle.  Suggested needle size for worsted weight is a #5 and for a thinner worsted a #4.  Basic knitting skills required, no prior sock experience not necessary.  All supplies are available at Yarns Unlimited.

RAH RAH TEAM SCARF                                                                                               
Saturday  8/1, 2-4 pm, Judith Smith-Ille
Create a beautiful color striped scarf for fall & winter in your favorite team colors.  You will learn a great cast on, carrying the yarn tail, perfect edges with two colors, easy two color yarn changes, exact color splicing and placement for wools and synthetics, casting off to match the beginning and blocking to end with a beautiful finish.  Whether your choices are blue & white, old gold and black, cream & crimson or scarlet & gray you will be on your way to not only perfecting your knitting techniques but getting ready for the gifting season for family and friends!  Suggested is worsted weight yarn and straight or circular needles from size 7 for a tighter knit scarf, or up to size 10 for a more open fabric.  Please have your yarn balled and read to knit.  Supplies are available at Yarns Unlimited and a sample of the scarf will be in the store in July.

TECHNIQUES NO KNITTER SHOULD BE WITHOUT - 25 tips to improve your knitting

Expand your knowledge with tips from the experts  -  they know that improving your knitting is all in the technical details.  Learn a variety of tricks to increase your skills to make your knitting projects look fabulous!  Don't tremble when you are ready to start a project  -  approach it with proven techniques to knit with confidence.  Please bring worsted weight yarn and size 7 or 8 straight needles and a circular needle size 5 to 8.  Needles will be available if you don't have these sizes.
Fee: $30 (includes printed material for all techniques used)

LEARN TO PERFECT YOUR CAST-ON FOR SMOOTH BEGINNINGS  -  Skill Builder Workshop - two classes

Saturday 7/25, 4-5 pm
We'll do the German long tail cast-on (either right or left handed) and get off to a smooth cast on beginning with just the right tension.  With just the flick of the finger you will learn the twisted version for a tighter edge.  We'll learn a little trick for yarn measuring and one for that pesky yarn tail.  This cast-on is the most popular cast-on in knitting today because it gives a nice smooth and even foundation to the beginning of the knitted item.  Bring worsted weight yarn and straight needles size 7, 8 or 9.  Printed material provided for every technique.
Fee:  $15.
 
PERFECT EDGES EVERY TIME FOR SCARVES AND EVERYTHING!  -  Skill Builder Workshop
Saturday 7/25,  2-3 pm., Judith Smith-Ille
Do the edges of your scarves look messy or bumpy?  We'll fix that problem in this class and your scarves, table runners or anything flat will look perfect!  Smooth neat edges are extremely helpful too for sweater sides to avoid lumps in the seams.  Bring worsted weight yarn and straight needles size 7 or 8.  Printed material provided for the techniques.
Fee:  $15.
 
JOINING YARNS THE EASY WAY  -  Skill Builder Workshop
Saturday 7/11,  2-3 pm, Judith Smith-Ille
This workshop will help you take the struggle out of joining yarns.  Never again will you worry about where to change yarn, in the middle of a row or at the edge, and no more weaving in of ends.  These joining methods will also help you with those dreaded knots in the yarn skeins.  These techniques are one of the most important things you can do to improve the quality of your knitting.  Printed material provided for these magical techniques.
Fee:  $15.

BABY SURPRISE JACKET BY ELIZABETH ZIMMERMAN
Monday 8/10, 8/17, 8/24, 8/31, 6:30-8:00 pm, Travis Hinkle
This is a great introduction to Elizabeth Zimmerman’s patterns.  This versatile design is made entirely of garter stitch and in one (odd-shaped) rectangular piece which is folded up to make a cardigan.  Sleeve length may be adjusted and a collar or hood may be added easily, making this the perfect sweater to customize!  This sweater can be made to fit a newborn to a toddler using different weights of yarn.   Knowledge of the longtail cast-on and basic knit and purl stitches are all that are required to make this sweater.  All materials available at Yarns Unlimited.  Fee:  $50 (includes pattern).

KNITTING WITH BEADS

Create a fanciful summer scarf using contemporary fibers and stunning beads.  It's easier than you think!

FABULOUS CROCHET FLOWERS

It’s summer and the flowers are blooming!  Make the ultimate accessories for your wardrobe.  This is a new class that will teach you how to make great crochet flowers that you can use as pins for your bags, jackets, dresses and hair—the possibilities are endless!  These flowers make great gifts as well.

SPINNING 101
Thursday 7/30, 8/6, 8/13,  6:00-8:00 pm, Kandy Schwandt
Making yarn on a spinning wheel is an age old craft that is perfect for our friends who are being earth friendly.  Join us in exploring this wonderful skill that will be a life long passion.  This class is designed for those who have never spun yarn before but who have always wanted to.  Sign up early, as Yarns Unlimited has a limited number of wheels that you can take home to practice on during your class weeks, or you may bring your own.
Fee: $60 (includes use of spinning wheel to take home—based on availability—and 4 oz. of roving yarn)

TWO-COLOR WORKSHOP
Saturday 8/15,  10:30-12:30 am,  Carolynne Gieryn
In just two hours you can learn the tricks of two color knitting.  It is easy and will push your knitting to a new level. Whether you are interested in hats, sweaters, or mittens this workshop will start you on your way.  Stop by By Hand Gallery and see the beautiful sweaters and hats that Carolynne creates with her techniques.
Fee: $25.

LOOM WEAVING
Tuesday 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 8/25  6:15-8:15 pm, Suzanne Halvorson
Hand loom weaving is an art that is finding a new voice.  This class for both beginners and intermediate weavers will introduce you to the joys of creating scarves, table runners, and much more o n four harness floor looms at Yarns Unlimited.  Intermediate students will learn about working with pattern, while beginners will focus on color, texture an d p lain weave.  Sign up early, as space is limited to 5 students.
Fee: $75 per four-week session (includes use of loom in the shop, materials extra)

WOVEN SHIBORI SCARF WORKSHOP

This class is for intermediate weavers who want to try a new woven technique.  Based on Catherine Ellis’ book, Woven Shibori, learn to weave in threads that will be pulled out later for resist dyeing.                                                                                                   
Fee: $55.  (includes use of weaving equipment and dyes)

RIGID HEDDLE WORKSHOP (all levels) – 2 classes

In yarn shops across the country Rigid Heddle weaving has taken off like a rocket!  You can use any knitting yarn to create a beautiful and fast hand-woven scarf.   Use our looms or bring your own...you will be sure to enjoy the scarf you make and hopefully be hooked and want to make many more.  This class is for both beginning and intermediate Rigid Heddle Loom weavers.

SUMMER KIDS DROP-IN KNITTING

Due to busy summer schedules we are offering Kids' Knitting during the summer as a drop-in class.  Each session will be $8.00 and your children may drop in on any of the dates listed.

KID'S SUMMER FIBER CAMP
July 6, 7, 8, & 9th, 9:30 am - 12 noon, Andrea Golden
This was a huge success last summer and is back by popular demand.  Children ages 8-12 are invited to a fiber camp July 6, 7, 8, and 9 at Yarns Unlimited.  It will be from 9:30-Noon each day with a break for a healthy snack.  Participants will learn knitting, weaving (on a floor loom), sewing using recycled sweaters, and needlefelting.  This sounds like so much fun, we may have to offer Fiber Camp for grown-ups as well!
Fee:  $65  (includes all supplies used for projects in class)


MONDAY NIGHT KNITTING CLINIC
Mondays, 6:00-8:00 pm, Nancy Lightfoot
All levels of knitters are welcome to this knitting support clinic. Our Master Knitter, Nancy Lightfoot, will be available to provide expert instruction and assistance on current projects including deciphering patterns and fixing mistakes.  She can also help you choose your next project and the perfect material to use.
Fee: $5 session (refundable with a minimum $5 purchase)


SUMMER TRAVEL AND WEAVING WORKSHOPS WITH SUZANNE
It is not to early to plan to travel and take a weaving workshop with Yarns Unlimited's Master Weaver, Suzanne Halvorson. She will be teaching a course called "Weave and Wander" for all skill levels that will include weaving and traveling to weaving studios at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico July 20-26, 2009.
